Do you experience dryness and burning in your eyes? If so, you may be among the 48 percent of Americans who report regularly experiencing dry eye symptoms.

Dry eyes occurs when a patient lacks sufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eyes.

Common symptoms of dry eye syndrome include:

  • Dryness
  • Burning
  • Light sensitivity
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Ocular pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Visual fatigue
  • Discomfort

The occurrence of dry eyes increases with age and is more common in women. Other risk factors include the use of certain medications, autoimmune inflammatory diseases and extended contact lens wear.

Environmental factors, such as wind, pollutants and allergens, also can contribute to dry eyes. In fact, the Dallas/Fort Worth region ranked fifth on the The National Women’s Health Resource Center’s list of American “Dry Eye Hot Spots.”

Dry eye syndrome can be diagnosed with a comprehensive eye exam. Traditionally, a diagnosis relied on an external examination of the eye, evaluation of the eyelids and cornea and measurement of the quality and quantity of tears.

However, identifying dry eye disease based on clinical signs can be challenging. Dr. Cargo is now offering a new technology that takes the guesswork out of diagnosing dry eye disease The new diagnostic test, known as InflammaDry®, tests for elevated levels of MMP-9, an inflammatory marker which is routinely elevated in the tears of patients with dry eye disease.

The easy-to-use, in-office test provides accurate results in 10 minutes, helping the doctor identify patients with dry eyes, who may have been missed by other testing methods.

If diagnosed with dry eyes, Dr. Cargo will work to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and issues. Common treatment options include the use of artificial tears or medicated eye drops.
